The Changing Golf Industry
The golf industry has changed dramatically in the last
few years. In a quest for ever-higher profits demanded
by shareholders, the public golf equipment companies
have moved most of their manufacturing offshore. Today,
the low cost producer is Mainland China. The trend is
to move assembly of finished clubs to China as well.
Although large manufacturers pay lip service to customization,
they mean customization within narrow parameters that
can be pre-built and stocked as inventory. Only a few
companies, California Golf Technologies included, deliver
truly customized clubs to individual order.
One result of the globalization of the golf industry
is that high quality components have become available
to custom clubmakers. Companies like Golfsmith, Golfworks,
SMT, KZG and Bang have become leaders in providing clubmakers
the products to build golf clubs that are not "just
as good as" but "superior to" most commercially
available products. This is proven every day as PGA
Tour professionals, Buy.com players and long drive contestants
increasingly put "custom-built" clubs into
play. They don't take chances. They are trying to win
money against fierce competition. They're after quality
and consistent performance.
Another important trend is the surge in custom clubmaking.
The Professional Clubmakers' Society (PCS) leads the
way by establishing professional standards and certifying
clubmakers' skills. There is no way to beat the quality
of a hand made set fitted and built by a qualified PCS
clubmaker. All CalGolfTech clubmakers are members of
the PCS. |
