The Fitting Process
Testing for Head Pattern and
Set Make Up
What you really mean is "does the head feel solid"
and more importantly, "what does the ball flight
look like?" Over the last few years manufacturers
have done the same thing to the lofts of irons that
they have done to shafts. They want to substantiate
a claim that their clubs will "hit the ball farther".
The only sure way to deliver on that claim is to put
a "9" on the bottom of a pitching wedge.
We recommend having your current set measured for loft
and lie and then finding your distances. Any discrepancies
will show up quickly. It is important to choose a set
made up of clubs that will cover every possible distance
in 10-15 yard intervals. Then, you choose your specific
clubs depending on your level of skill. A common adjustment
is to replace long irons with 7 and 9 woods or with
easier-to-hit utility clubs.
We have found in our testing that some golfers are
simply not strong enough to produce any significant
carry distance in their long irons. In these cases,
substituting utility woods for long irons has been very
effective.
Our view is that choosing a head pattern is purely
a matter of personal choice and whether you truly believe
you'll play better if you use clubs preferred by whoever
might be your current idol on Tour. If you don't have
any favorites, we offer the alternative of our "no
name prototypes". We can also make a nearly perfect
set of clubs from any manufacturer. |
