The Fitting Process
Testing for Shaft Flex and Material
Once you have found your length, you need to find your
flex and shaft material. This is usually accomplished
by a similar method. A series of test clubs of correct
length is provided. Different flexes are provided, specific
choices indicated by your swing speed. You hit them.
You choose, you buy, hopefully without going home.
We prefer to conduct this step with our "electronic
assistant". Hitting test clubs, recording the swing
speed, carry distance and "efficiency" as
measured electronically, is a much better indicator
of performance than relying on feel alone. It is simply
important to gather all the available data to help making
an informed choice.
Testing for flex is almost always done indoors, or
at a range off of a mat. We would rather simulate actual
playing conditions. Hitting off a mat is very different
from grass and gives very different feedback. You're
going to play on grass; you should test your clubs and
make your choices on grass if at all possible. This
is also true for the next step, choosing your iron head
design. The shape of the sole is very important in determining
performance. You'll never know that unless you hit off
of grass.
In a perfect world, you would make some preliminary
choices and take a set of test clubs to the course.
You would see how they behave in play. It might be more
complicated and take longer, but in the end, if you
get a set that fits instead of one you're going to trade,
it will be worth the investment. We have a variety of
sets, made to different specifications available for
short-term rental so you can truly try before you buy. |
