Wilson Progressives
If you're thinking about a good set to play that won't break the bank, Wilson Progressives should be your choice. Payne Stewart was an advocate and won some of his tournaments with this design.

It is a forged, offset, cavity back set in the long and mid irons and a pure muscle back in the short irons. The only drawback is that the heads want taper shafts so if you are thinking about playing graphite, you will need to get them bored out. This is a pretty cheap alternative to some of our more exotic choices.

You can usually find a set of Progressives on eBay in the $150-$300 range, depending on condition. This would be a very inexpensive way to give forged clubs a try.
