Head Weight
One of the little known details of custom clubmaking
is that there is a "standard" weight in iron
heads. Within a gram or two, a "standard"
three iron head weighs 233 grams. Each successive club
is seven grams heavier. As the heads get heavier, the
shafts get shorter, swingweight, theoretically, stays
the same.
The problem is that with a manufacturing tolerance
of (+ or -) three grams, a six iron can weigh the same
as a seven iron. Swingweights become inconsistent. Then,
there is a more difficult problem. The "standard"
7-gram weight progressions do not produce consistent
swingweights, especially in over length clubs.
We have chosen to solve the problem by using software
and our own custom ground and finished iron heads. Software
lets us "pre build" all of our sets "virtually"
with the actual heads, shafts and grips that we will
use in your finished set. All iron heads are custom
ground to a specific gram weight to fit the shaft weight,
shaft length and grip to produce the target swingweight.
There is no guesswork.
Head weight is a crucial element in determining swingweight,
overall weight and balance in a golf club. Rather than
a variance of (+ or -) 3 grams, our iron head weights
vary by as much as 20 grams in the same head. This is
the advantage of true customization. Your head weight
will be determined depending on specific length, shaft
weight and grip weight of the finished club. We can
deliver clubs with lightweight graphite shafts that
still have "feel". |
