In early March, Nike discovered that a percentage of
the SUMO2 drivers they had shipped did not pass the
USGA "Characteristic Time" test - meaning the heads
on those drivers were too hot. The USGA then
determined that all Nike SUMO2 drivers were non-
conforming and therefore not legal to play in any
USGA sanctioned event or even to play in a round that
would be posted to set a handicap. Oops!
Nike initiated a product recall which they hoped would
solve the problem as expeditiously as possible.
SUMO2 owners were asked to contact Nike to receive
a replacement driver and then return the non-
conforming driver to Nike. All of this was at Nike's
expense. It was a classic response from a company
trying to do the right thing when mistakes happen.
Nike's plan did not solve the problem for all SUMO2
owners. For players who had reshafted their drivers
with high performance shafts, aligned their shafts with
the SST PURE system or customized any other aspect
of the SUMO2 there was no good answer. Nike was
not in a position to replace a customized driver. Nike
offered to allow players to send their drivers to Nike for
conformance testing but the wait was long and
outcome still uncertain.
Nike struck a unique and innovative agreement with
the Golf Lab to solve the problem - at least in
Northern California. A large shipment of conforming
SUMO2 drivers was allocated and sent to the Golf
Lab. All Golf Lab customers and any other SUMO2
owner who may have customized his SUMO2 driver is
invited to bring their driver to the Golf Lab where we
will pull the shaft and install a conforming SUMO2
head. Your driver will be as good as new and we will
assiduously preserve any enhancements. There is
no charge.
If you call ahead so we know when you're coming,
we'll do the job while you wait so your inconvenience
is minimized. And, as a token of our appreciation,
we'll give you a dozen new Nike Ignite golf balls.
At the Golf Lab, we go out of our way to help our
customers play better golf. When complications arise,
we go out of our way to solve the problem. Working
together with Nike on the SUMO2 recall assures that
our customers will be among the very first to have their
conforming SUMO2 drivers back in play in USGA
sanctioned events.
To arrange for a swap, call the Golf Lab. (650) 493-

PS: We think the SUMO2 is one of the best of the new
high MOI drivers. If you are thinking about a new driver
in 2007, we now have a complete inventory of
conforming SUMO2's in stock. Schedule a driver
fitting to see for yourself how high MOI drivers can
improve your accuracy.
Miura - New for 2007
When you get it right the first time, you don't have to
make cosmetic changes to your irons two or three
times a season. Miura irons are classic styles that
hold their value because they perform like no other
forged iron.
Once in a while, classic designs can be tweaked to
improve performance. That's what's new from Miura
for 2007.
The 101 is being replaced by the 102. The 102 is a
great iron for a player who wants a little more
forgiveness and a slightly larger size. The offset of the
101 has been reduced, the top line thinned and a little
more bounce added to the sole grind. The new Miura
logo appears in the cavity.
The 201 is getting a slight facelift but the model
number remains the same. The top line has been
thinned out, the sole grind gets a little more bounce
and the cavity stamping is now the new Miura logo
matching the 301 that came out last year.
By the time you see this ad, the new Miura drivers,
fairway woods and utilities will be out. See them first
at the Golf Lab.
The Golf Lab is a great place to get your Miura irons
custom fitted and custom built. No golf shop in
California has more experience with Miuras. We can
make sure that we match your custom set up with the
perfect shaft. Of course, all Miuras are SST PUREd
and delivered with premium shafts including the
Aerotech Steel Fiber, the Nippon 1150 Tour and the
True Temper Tour Concept.
